Canada SCORES Toronto Affiliate Receives Grant from Whitby Mayor’s Community Development Fund
Oshawa, May 7, 2026 – On Tuesday May 5th during a regular Canada SCORES after school program at West Lynde Public School in Whitby, Ontario, Poet-Athletes were treated to a special group of visitors during their indoor soccer session.
Her worship Mayor Elizabeth Roy - Mayor of Whitby, was joined by two representatives of the Mayor’s Community Development Fund grants review committee as they presided over a momentous cheque presentation to Canada SCORES National Executive Director, Nick Taylor.
Canada SCORES had been selected for the very first time, to receive funding from the Mayor’s Fund in support of program continuation at the Whitby elementary school.
When receiving the funds, National ED Nick Taylor said, “We are so very grateful for the support from Mayor Roy and the Grant Committee, of our program here at West Lynde. Following the establishment of the Toronto affiliate in early 2024, and launching pilot programs during the ‘24-’25 school year in Pickering and Oshawa, the ‘25-’26 school term expansion including here in Whitby at West Lynde has gone very well. These critical funds will ensure that we can continue to deliver a positive impact here in the community next year and build on the early success of this after school program.”
Canada SCORES programming is supported by funds raised through grants, sponsorships, donations and event revenue, ensuring that there is no cost at all to the regional school board, the school itself, or any of the participanting families.
The unique three-part curriculum including soccer, poetry and service learning was developed over thirty years ago by Canadian Julie Kennedy when she was teaching at Marie Reed school in Washington DC. Kennedy’s efforts resulted in DC SCORES being established as a 1994 FIFA World Cup Legacy Program, which has grown and expanded over the years to today’s SCORES Network that includes 13 affiliates across North America, including in Metro Vancouver and the Greater Toronto Area.
The Canada SCORES mission is to inspire youth to lead healthy lives, be engaged students, and have the confidence and character to make a difference in the world.
