Finding His Voice: How Farian Grew Into a Confident Poet-Athlete

When Farian joined Canada SCORES in Grade 4, he wasn’t sure the program was for him. Soccer didn’t interest him much, and the idea of writing poetry — and sharing it out loud — sounded daunting. But something about the combination of creativity, community, and encouragement from his coaches convinced him to give it a try.

It was through poetry that Farian began to shine. At first, he wrote quietly, choosing his words carefully. But over time, his poems became a reflection of his thoughts, feelings, and growing confidence. His coaches noticed his unique voice and selected him to represent his school at the Red Carpet Poetry Slam — an impressive accomplishment. Though he didn’t win that year, standing on stage and sharing his words opened a new door for him.

“I was nervous,” he recalls, “but once I started speaking, I felt proud. It made me want to keep writing.”

The following year, Farian returned to the Slam with a new poem — one that captured his imagination and courage. This time, he won. The audience erupted in applause, but for Farian, the victory was about more than the trophy. It was proof that his voice mattered.

How Grateful I Am

By: Farian, Grade 5

Lord Kelvin Community School, New Westminster

Oh my dear family,

Thank you for always keeping me happy.

You always stay beside me,

I appreciate you lovingly.

I feel lucky because I have you.

I want you to be in my deja-vu.

I remember when I was brand-new,

You make me proud when you speak like dew.

When I am with you, you put on a show,

I hope I will always to you say WOAH!

You make me feel good when you pull me up from the low.

I will never from you, ever be towed.

Now in Grade 7, Farian is part of the SCORES in Action Program, where he and his teammates work together to build a social business that gives back to the community. The same creativity and confidence that once helped him craft his poetry now help him lead and collaborate in new ways.

“Poetry taught me to express myself,” he says. “Now I use that same confidence to share ideas and help others.”

Through poetry, Farian discovered his voice. Through teamwork and service, he’s learning how to use it — to inspire, to connect, and to make a difference. His journey reflects what Canada SCORES is all about: inspiring youth to believe in themselves and their ability to create change.

This Giving Season, you can help more children like Farian find their voice and their purpose. Every gift up to $50,000 will be matched, doubling your impact for young Poet-Athletes. Together, we can nurture the next generation of leaders and changemakers — one verse, one idea, and one child at a time.
